Jose Mourinho reacts to Toby Alderweireld's injury after the win over Manchester City | Astro SuperSport
Jose, thank you for talking to Astro Super Sport. Two goals, a clean sheet, and top of the Premier League—so much to be happy about. But what was the most pleasing aspect for you?
The way the team played because we played the way we wanted to play. We didn't play the way they wanted us to play or the way some people at home wanted us to play. I told the players they were in the national team for 12 days, but myself, my assistants, and my analysts were working hard. We gave the players the plan and the confidence to try to execute it, and they were fantastic. They did everything perfectly from a defensive point of view. When we made one or two mistakes, our super goalkeeper was there. We went there three or four times and scored three goals. Of course, one was offside, but we were very clinical. The performance was very good.
Since that thrill here with West Ham, where you conceded late on, was that sort of defensive issue something you've been working on particularly hard?
We started working on that immediately after the pain we felt from having three points in our hands and losing them. That pain helped us to work on it. The reality is that after that, we secured some results—1-0, 2-1, today 2-0. We are not free of another mistake, which in the end is not a mistake; it's the quality of the Premier League. In other leagues, you are winning 2-0 and the game is over. In the Premier League, it's never over.
Considering other teams are slipping up like Manchester City and Liverpool, does this feel like the most perfect opportunity to seize this season for the title?
I don't think they are slipping. I just think they can lose matches against very good teams. City lost against Tottenham, and Tottenham has a very good team. Tomorrow is Liverpool against Leicester, and they are two very good teams too. The situation is that every match is difficult, and that creates a beautiful competition.
I know you have a very heavy schedule, with Europa League midweek. How is Toby Alderweireld? Is it a bad injury?
Yes, it's a muscular injury. It's a bad injury that will keep him away for weeks. It's the injury of fatigue, but he was playing with his national team to qualify for the final four of the Nations League. I understand that completely. Today's game was very intense, and for a few minutes, he couldn't resist.
That being said, you used all three of your substitutions. Shortly after, I think it was Reguilon who had a slight issue. Can you explain?
If I could make a fourth or fifth change, I wouldn't change Toby. I would try to keep him for the 90 minutes because he's in a position where you are not going to change unless the player gives you a signal. He didn't give any sign; he just collapsed at a certain moment. So today, if I had a fourth or fifth chance, I wouldn't do it. I also understand the people that are not in favor.
Congratulations anyway, and thanks very much.
