Niki Lauda's 55 Seconds of Death
In 1976, Niki Lauda's life changed in 55 seconds during the German Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. Lauda, the reigning Formula 1 World Champion, faced a near-fatal crash that left him severely burned. Despite initial dire predictions and even receiving last rites, Lauda miraculously survived. His determination and resilience saw him return to racing just 33 days later, finishing fourth at Monza. The crash and his recovery became a defining moment in his career and life. Lauda went on to win two more World Championships before retiring in 1985. He passed away on May 20, 2019, due to complications from a lung transplant, a consequence of inhaling toxic fumes during the crash.
