"Do well, or do not bother" - Lilia Podkopayeva feature from the 1996 Olympics

With this field, she will have to be tough. Will Lilia Podkopayeva dance her way to gold? When a young Lilia was brought to the training center, she was told by her grandmother, "Do well or do not bother." Perhaps that is why she has worked so hard and trained so long for this moment. She is watched over by a former all-around champion, Ludmila Teresava, the last woman to follow a world championship with an Olympic gold. Lilia does get out of the gym. On her day of rest, she and her coach often take a cultural tour of Kiev—sometimes the museums, sometimes the ballet—always with an eye on improving. She was not a child prodigy; she was not a can't-miss gymnast. She has earned this opportunity to bring the first gold medal to an independent Ukraine.
