QB Ian Book Shares Wild Injury Story from the 2018 Northwestern Game | Notre Dame Football

Former Notre Dame QB Ian Book joined ISD's Greg Flammang on Hit & Hustle and shared a candid story from his playing days. During a game at Northwestern, Book got hit in a gap between his rib protector and back plate, causing severe pain and difficulty breathing. Despite this, he continued playing without informing the trainers. At halftime, he discovered he was urinating blood, indicating a serious injury, but chose not to report it to avoid being pulled from the game. He consulted a pre-med teammate who couldn't provide clarity. Book played the rest of the game, even scoring a crucial touchdown. After the game, a long, painful bus ride ensued. Medical tests later revealed he had fractured ribs and a bruised kidney, forcing him to miss the next game. Book reflected on the toughness required in football and how such stories often remain within the team until after a player's career.
