Before UFC 196, heavyweight champion Fabricio Werdum has pulled out of the event due to injuries. Werdum communicated this via a WhatsApp group with Brazilian journalists, explaining that he had been dealing with a foot injury for weeks but was still planning to fight Cain Velasquez. However, with Velasquez also pulling out and Werdum sustaining a back injury, he decided not to fight Stipe Miocic on short notice. Werdum stated that he couldn't risk his belt against a different opponent with such short preparation time.
