In 2019, at just 22 years old, Egan Bernal became the first South American winner of the Tour de France. Two years later, the Colombian added the Giro d'Italia to his impressive palmares. However, a horrific collision during training left him fighting for his life. Bernal recalls the crash, saying he was going 60 kilometers an hour when he hit a stationary bus, and he felt pain everywhere. Despite the severe injuries, he was grateful to be alive.
In the Intensive Care Unit, Bernal began to move his legs again and thought if he could move them, he could get back on the bike. The recovery process was challenging, but it made him realize the importance of life beyond cycling. He emphasizes that while cycling is a significant part of his life, family and loved ones are far more valuable.
Bernal still has the ambition to win and be the best, but he also acknowledges that if he doesn't achieve that, it doesn't matter as much. He has his family and his dog waiting for him at home. His goal is to compete at the Tour de France at a competitive level and give his best effort.
