The Tragic Story of Andrew Luck
Andrew Luck, in his first three seasons with the Indianapolis Colts, endured significant punishment, taking heavy hits each game. Despite his talent, which coach Bruce Arians ranked above even Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, and Ben Roethlisberger, Luck's career was cut short. As the son of former NFL quarterback Oliver Luck, Andrew faced high expectations from a young age. He excelled in high school, both academically and athletically, and chose Stanford for its academic reputation. At Stanford, he broke several records and became a top NFL draft prospect, ultimately being selected first overall by the Colts in 2012.
Luck's early NFL career was marked by impressive performances, leading the Colts to multiple playoff appearances. However, he was frequently sacked due to inadequate offensive line protection, taking a toll on his body. Despite his efforts, including a record-breaking comeback against the Chiefs in a playoff game, the Colts' failure to adequately support him led to mounting injuries.
Luck missed the entire 2017 season due to shoulder surgery but made a successful return in 2018, leading the Colts to a playoff berth and earning Comeback Player of the Year. Nevertheless, the constant injuries and rehabilitation drained his passion for the game. In 2019, at just 29 years old, Luck announced his retirement, citing the toll on his mental and physical health.
His retirement left a significant void for the Colts, who have struggled to find a stable quarterback since. Andrew Luck's career remains one of the biggest "what-if" stories in NFL history.
