USWNT | Abby Dahlkemper and the Long Road Back

Last year, 2022, was the toughest year of my career. Part of my vertebrae had basically blown up into small pieces, causing bone fragments to hit my nerve root. The surgery was very intense; it was a T-lift with a spinal fusion. They cleared out my joint and vertebrae space, and I now have hardware in there. I wondered if I would ever be able to play soccer again. It was a long process, but ultimately rewarding, and just a chapter in my life. On the one-year anniversary of my surgery, I was called back into the national team, which sent chills up my spine. I was thankful and trusted the process, leaning on friends, family, my husband, and dogs. That call was a special moment I will never take for granted. My first appearance since April 2022 was significant, and wearing the crest again is indescribable because the road back was hard but rewarding. With a new perspective and love for the game, representing my country and competing with the best players in the world is truly special.
